How to make your website discoverable in Google and AI search

A practical checklist for crawl access, useful service pages, clear business information and visibility in Google, Bing and AI search experiences.

01

Start with access and an indexable page

Inspect your important URLs before editing keywords. They should return successful responses, show meaningful text and work without an account. Check robots.txt, page-level directives, canonical URLs and firewall restrictions. A sitemap lists preferred URLs; internal links explain how the pages connect.

Use Google Search Console to inspect pages, submit the sitemap and review indexing issues. Bing Webmaster Tools provides a separate view of Bing access and indexing. Technical eligibility does not guarantee that a page will be indexed, so use these tools as evidence of what happened.

02

Answer a real buying decision

Explain who each service is for, the problem it addresses, deliverables, delivery process and next step. Use terms customers recognise, such as custom software development or business system integration. Give pages distinct purposes instead of repeating generic descriptions across many URLs.

Show evidence: live demos, explained technical decisions or an honest project example. Label demonstrations clearly. Do not invent client results, fabricate reviews or publish pages for locations where the business has no meaningful presence. Useful detail earns more trust than repeated keywords.

03

Understand what AI search needs

Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode use existing search foundations and need no separate special markup. Keep answers in accessible text, use descriptive headings and make structured data agree with the visible page. An opening answer followed by examples and limitations helps readers assess the material.

For ChatGPT search, review OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot guidance and restrictions at the hosting layer. Search access and model-training permissions are separate controls. Allowing access does not guarantee a citation. A machine-readable site summary can be convenient, but does not replace crawlable pages or constitute a ranking requirement.

04

Describe the business and content accurately

Structured data describes a page; it does not repair weak copy or guarantee a rich result. Validate it after changes. Avoid adding ratings, prices, addresses or credentials the business has not supplied.

  • Write distinct, descriptive page titles and concise descriptions.
  • Use one preferred URL consistently in links, canonicals and the sitemap.
  • Identify the business using accurate Organization and WebSite structured data.
  • Show the article publisher, real publication dates and sources.
  • Use Article and BreadcrumbList data to describe eligible visible content.
  • Provide image alternatives and keyboard-accessible links.
05

Check the experience on a real phone

Visitors should be able to read the offer, navigate and complete the main task on a narrow screen. Size images appropriately, reserve space for media and defer features until needed. Browser checks should accompany search checks.

Core Web Vitals cover loading, responsiveness and visual stability. Inspect field data when available and use lab diagnostics to find problems. One desktop score does not prove every visitor has a good experience. A faster page still needs to answer the customer's question.

06

Measure useful discovery

Review relevant queries, page impressions, clicks and qualified enquiries. Track the journey where your analytics and consent setup permit. Bing's AI Performance reporting provides citation activity across supported AI experiences, separately from ordinary search clicks.

Prioritise specific problems: unexplained service scope, unanswered questions or links to old URLs. Revise material when its facts change. Consistent improvements and measurement are more credible than promising first position for every search.
